Work is our Worship
We had the honour of hearing the #Dabbawallas from #Mumbai speak to our team and share their experiences. People who want to learn more about them, you can go to their web site at www.mumbaidabbawala.in
The dabbawala business is about carrying tiffins from homes of people and drop them off at their offices . It all started in the year 1890, when a Parsi couple, who were in love and the wife particularly wanted her husband to eat home food, hired a man to carry his tiffin each day to work. Since then and till this year the business has grown to a transactions size of two million deliveries per day. 124 years of business and error of one in 16 million transactions….. Simply Unbelievable!!
They are #SixSigma certified in their operations and #Harvard-business school have done a case study on their marvellous efficiency. Believe it or not, they have no technology support of any kind. No #ERP (enterprise resource planning) and yet they are in complete alignment….
Here are some of the highlights that were shared with us in their presentation –
- Work is our worship
Serving our #customers is serving #God.
Time is money.
Unity is our power.
85% of all people in the business are illiterate .
There are 5000 people who work in the business and we all are shareholders.
We deliver 2 million tiffins a day and when Harvard business school did a case study on us , They told us that we do 4 million transactions a day. We asked how is that ? And they said “You deliver 2 million tiffins a day and thereafter you also pick it up from the offices and deliver it back to their homes. So it’s four and not two million.
Our error rate is one in 16 million transactions.”
No technology support.
No fuel cost, we travel by bicycles and on trains.
No Strike in 124 years .
Zero dispute .
The director of our company also works like us and if there is a problem we solve it within ourselves.
For us error is horror.
On #Diwali day , we expect one month bonus from our customers, which comes to 8000 rupees and if they decide not to give us, then we simply wish them #Happy-Diwali!
We have no human resources department, if someone wants to leave, the rule is simple find your replacement.
When our good work reached all corners of the world, we were asked by #PrinceCharles to visit him while he was in Mumbai. We told him, we would welcome him to visit us in the train station and explained that we could not visit , coz it would disturb our delivery schedule. He obliged and visited us and spent 20 min with us at the train station.
When we were approached by #SixSigma and were told to come at a function, ten of us went by taxi to the function. When we were given the certificate we said “You called us here for a certificate?? We work for our customers and not for any certificate!!
The above interaction and experience was a very humbling one and I do believe that there is so much for us learn from it. I wanted to share and spread their story to all of you and hope it will motivate and move you as it did to us all….
Let’s make our work – Our Worship Place.
