Raj kapoor – The Showman & a Family Man

I am on a flight to #Bombay, sorry its #Mumbai but my heart and mind still relates to Bombay ….

To me many old memories come up when I think of Mumbai…. Most of my summer vacations as kid were spent here at my grandparents home at #Chembur. A home of a Great #Showman, Mr. #RajKapoor.

To us, he was just a grandfather and a man who gave us love and spoilt us with all that a grandfather would do to any grand kid…

He passed away when he was only 63!!  And the last time he stood on his feet was at the time, when he was receiving the highest award  by the #President of India for his contribution to the Indian cinema…

We were in our early teenage years when he passed away and I never  realised the love and respect he had earned world wide. We realized it as we grew in age…

I remember, soon after his death the #Soviet-Union wanted someone to write a book on him and tell His story… My mother took that challenge and authored a book on her father. After it was released , one day when we were having dinner at home we got a call from the President of India’s office asking for my mother, asking her to be present to meet the #President-of-Russia , Mr. Yeltsin ( a request by him to see a member of the #Kapoor-family) … It was an honour and when my mom heard of this, she broke down because she felt very emotional and was speechless that a President of such a large county would remember  her father and would want to meet a family member.

She went to meet him along with her book which she had written on her father and when she presented the book to him, she asked him to sign on it. Instead , Mr Yeltsin asked my mother for an autograph…. My mom was so taken a back with this  request and he went on to say that he grew up seeing Raj Kapoor films and was a great fan of him..

Since then I have heard so many stories about  him from so many people  all over the world including  the US ….. When I was in college at Upenn in Philadelphia, there was a heavy storm and it was impossible to find a cab. After waiting for a while, I finally got one and was on my way to the dorms and suddenly I heard a familiar voice in the car and a Russian cab driver was hearing one of Raj Kapoor’s songs!!!! I was so surprised and took few seconds for it to sink in that I truly was hearing his voice in a cab at Philadelphia…. and when I told the cab driver that he was my grandfather, he refused to take any money from me and called me over for dinner the next day … All of this in #Philadelphia.. Wow..

Today he may not be alive, but his spirit still lives on and I feel as excited as I did in my school days to visit Mumbai, even if it meant that today I am coming for an official meet with  bankers.. But the air of Mumbai still surrounds my heart with all the warmth and love…

And my grandmother Mrs. Krishna Raj Kapoor,  has a very special space in my heart and she has stood through the entire family for all these years. Dressed elegantly in her white sari for all her formal events and even today at an age of 84, she is young at heart and looks like in her early 60’s..

May god bless her…….
