HP Nanda
Today is the birth anniversary of my grandfather H. P. Nanda. He would be 96 years were he alive today. And as always, we held a prayer meeting with my father and key team members from the plant and offices across the company.
Looking at his garlanded portrait, memories of him came flooded back with all their emotional intensity.
What did he have to go through to build an organization that touched so many lives and made a difference to thousands? Did he not have his insecurities, his fears, his self doubts? I know he did, but he soldiered on. He cast them aside and had deep faith in his capabilities, to turn adversity into an opportunity.

People around him saw this in him. They saw that he always carried a visionary approach to his decision-making and instinctively knew that if not today, the benefits would flow tomorrow. They placed their trust in him, even as he exhorted them to excel, always knowing that he was there for them.
In many ways he was “tomorrow’s man”.
J R D Tata and he were contemporaries – both fearless leaders intent on creating not only a company, but in changing their society. Both carried a mutual respect, which translated itself in support, during the takeover crisis that Escorts faced many decades ago. Committed in building a culture of entrepreneurship, both these leaders set out to transform their worlds.
This abiding culture manifested itself, in the quiet unassuming handover of the Tata reins to Mr. Cyrus Mistry by Mr. Ratan Tata.
So many forces all need to come together, if you want to be a wealth builder for society and for yourself. These men were tough, shrewd and possessed an infinite capacity to persevere and not only to harness, but also unleash the talent of their teams.
I will never forget his smile, his penetrating look which seemed to say, “Get on with it”, which I see every day in his portrait, as I walk into office.
A smile that seems to magically reach out and beckon, that the possibilities are endless, limited only by our own vision and this inspires and provides me the energy needed to build Escorts. That’s the only gift, which I know he would like and I re-dedicate this passion to him.
Happy Birthday!

Heartfelt tribute to a grandfather, a visionary, a legend.
While I was doing my studies, I got an interesting assignment to do. I was asked to write on the of history of Faridabad. Sharing an excerpts..
“Many engineers in 80s and 90s had a dream and the dream was to come to Faridabad and work for Escorts company. Many from far-off Indian cities migrated to Faridabad and embraced the multi- culture of city. Many entrepreneurs came to Faridabad and started their first ever businesses being associated with Escorts.
While nurturing and turning Escorts into a diversified conglomerate of India, Mr. HP Nanda drew the fate of this city. This city has no history without Mr. HP Nanda and his vision. People of this city owe a lot to Mr. HP Nanda.”
I salute the great visionary of India and helping my city coming up on world map.
I am proud to be part of this great history and certainly great future.
Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂
